When I began my quest to become a professional dog trainer I decided early on that I would not spare money, time or effort by achieving something that I was so passionate about. It is no easy task to choose a reputable source from which to learn the skill of dog training. The things I was taught at the schools were tried and true methods and skills acquired through years of practice and revision. My teachers understood the fact that there would always be a societal need for professional dog training instructors and took great pride in passing down their experience to us students. Their expertise in the development of methods which are effective, efficient and ethical show in the performance and success of their dogs. I consider myself grateful and fortunate to have learned from some of the best!
Receiving certification as a NOVICE and PROFESSIONAL trainer from the Tom Rose School of Dog Training, MO. in 2000 is fundamental to my ability to train top performance and competition dogs. I spent six month living on school grounds, living and breathing dogs. Tuition was not cheap and the school had a passing rate of only 60%. The requirements consisted of having to pass and/or score with a number of dogs in certain fields of training and competition. Additionally, students were expected to instruct private and group classes and train dogs that were boarded at the school. While there, one of my instructors, Rob Schenberg, allowed me to borrow his Golden Retriever "Lucky" to complete a number of my requirements. "Lucky" became the poster child for the AMERICAN SERVICE DOG ASSOCIATION, giving me as his trainer a bit of publicity, due to a local fundraiser hosted by THREE DOG BAKERY. It was a true privilege and worth every minute to learn from TOM ROSE, ROB SCHENBERG and CAROL BARTON at the TRS!
My motivation to attend a three month Police K-9 Course at K-9 World of Dogs in MI in 2001 stemmed from my recent experience at the TRS. Robert Austin trained, certified and sold his own Police dogs, which enabled me to work closely with law enforcement teams from various departments. He also introduced me to the sport of KNPV and French Ring, while allowing me to train and handle his top titled import dogs, in addition to a variety of guard and personal protection dogs. It was of great benefit to me, to work with these experienced athletes (like Schutzhund dogs that had V-titled overseas more than 15 times!). I learned that such dogs teach you a great deal, like having to adapt to a situation quickly, think on your feet to be safe and therefore become a more efficient and experienced handler. While learning from Mr. Austin I continued to learn how to apply a variety of tools and methods that achieved results with even the most complex and difficult dogs. Thank you, Bob, RIP!
